Seniors Support

Jewish Family Services offers two distinct Seniors Support Programs: The Thelma Steinman Seniors Support Services, and the Diverse Seniors Support Services. These programs work to support seniors, decrease social isolation and increase quality of life.

THELMA STEINMAN SENIORS SUPPORT SERVICES

The Thelma Steinman Seniors Support Services, at Jewish Family Services of Ottawa, offers comprehensive services to assist Jewish seniors and their families to identify and access needed supports, resources and programs to successfully manage life transitions and changing circumstances. Our professional staff work with you to enhance independent living, safely and meaningfully.

Programs

Please note that the ADP program has moved virtually and is available by video and phone chat.  Technology support is available.

JFS offers a weekly Adult Day Program (ADP) for Jewish seniors dealing with mild to moderate cognitive impairment. The program provides participants with one-on-one opportunities to work with staff on skill development and social interaction. Our qualifid ADP staff take an individualized approach, focussing on the strengths of participants and drawing on their needs, interests, and experiences.

Cost:  $50/month (subject to change)

Program times: Wednesdays 10:00 am – 12:30 pm OR 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm.

A comprehensive service available to Jewish seniors and their families that includes:

  • In-home assessments, individualized care plans, and on-going case-management.
  • Coordination of care with government agencies, health professionals and service providers.
  • Navigation of Jewish communal and general Ottawa programs and services for seniors.
  • Dementia consultations for family caregivers.
  • Facilitating seniors and their families to engage in often difficult conversations around Power of Attorney, personal care, and/or finances, etc.
  • Short term individual and family counselling.
  • Assistance with the application process and transition into retirement homes, or long-term care facilities.
  • Information and referral
  • Long distance caregiving

This is a fee-for-service program. A sliding scale is available.

Groceries to Your Door

JFS is excited to announce a new grocery shopping and delivery program, JCART. This grocery shopping program is aimed at helping seniors getting their groceries and other essential items, including medications delivered right to their door. The cost for accessing this program is $15/order.

This service is only available for the following stores:

  • Loblaws
  • Real Canadian Super Store
  • Your Independent Grocer

This program gives Jewish seniors the opportunity to stay connected and feel safe by having a volunteer call at a pre-arranged time each weekday.  Where a client fails to answer the call, an individualized emergency plan is put into action, notifying the right people and ensuring the appropriate help arrives in a timely fashion.

Friends are critical to the maintenance of good health.  They break up isolation, ensure appropriate socialization, and reinforce one’s value.

Jewish Family Services can help arrange for a volunteer to virtually visit you in your home on a regular or occasional basis visits.  Available by phone and by video.

Thelma Steinman Seniors Support Services provide several options for Kosher food security. KMOW offers nutritious, Kosher meals on Wednesdays and Fridays that can be tailored to accommodate most special dietary needs, such as no-salt added or diabetic-friendly. Delivered by our JFS driver to your door.  Prices are reasonable and include all taxes and delivery, and are billed monthly.

Costs

  • Wednesday meals: $9.00
  • Friday meals: $11.00
  • Frozen meals: $8.00
  • Individual soups: $2.50 (frozen, available Wed. & Fri.)

Transportation is available to medical appointments, adult day programs, and social-recreational programs. Drives are available to/from anywhere in the city for only $12 per round trip!  Rides are in a community van and always with personal care and attention.

Covid-19 rules:  Before every trip, riders must confirm they’ve taken precautions like washing or sanitizing their hands and must wear a face covering while in the vehicle. 

A short intake with the Transportation coordinator is necessary to access this service. 

Please note that rides are booked on Tuesdays for the following week. Last minute rides will be booked through our LYFT program. It is strongly advised that clients have a cell phone when accessing our LYFT program.

The objective of The Holocaust Assistance Program at Jewish Family Services is to assist eligible Jewish victims of Nazi Germany to receive the best possible care that enables them to stay in their own homes, and age with dignity.

JFS is able to provide an array of services due to the generous funding of The Conference of Material Claims Against Germany (The Claims Conference), The Azrieli Foundation and The Alfred Landecker Foundation, Inc.

“We can’t change their past…, but we can try to improve their present.”

Services include:

  • Assistance with the application process for compensation programs

  • Social work services provided in both English and Russian.
  • Home Care: Personal Support Workers, housekeeping and assistance with personal errands.
  • Assistance to access and pay for needed material goods such as: food, rent, dental care, hearing aids, safety equipment etc.

Please note there are eligibility criteria to access certain programs. There are no fees to access any of the programs.  Russian speaking social workers are available.

The goal is to allow seniors from diverse populations to live in their communities with dignity, respect and independence for as long as they are able. Improving cultural competency of health services is one step towards a more responsive, effective system.
