The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany
The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) has provided two allocations to JFS Ottawa to assist Jewish victims of Nazi Germany.
- HOME CARE SERVICE FUNDS:
Provides home care services, such as personal support workers, housekeepers, nurses, etc to enhance quality of life and enable survivors to remain in their own homes safely.
- ASSISTANCE FUNDS:
Funds are used to help survivors with the following:
Dental assistance including dentures
Medical assistance, including hearing aids, eye glasses, orthopedic shoes, walkers, assistive devices, physiotherapy, etc
Housing equipment, utilities etc.
Clothing, food etc, etc.
All funds are paid to the service providers
Eligiblity requirements differ for both funds.

In addition, The Cummings Centre for Seniors in Montreal has been designated to administer the Hungarian Gold Train Survivor Emergency Assistance Fund.
Jewish Family Services of Ottawa has been asked to submit applications on behalf of eligible survivors living in the Ottawa area. This fund is designated to Holocaust survivors living in Canada who were born before May 8, 1945 and who lived within the 1944 borders of Hungary between 1939 and 1945. Eligibility is based on financial need, war time circumstances and location.
Funds are used to help survivors with the following:
- Home help - caregiver support, housekeeping, meal preparation …
- Dental assistance
- Medical assistance - glasses, orthopedic footwear, hearing aids....
- Housing – adapting dwelling, emergency housing costs
- Food – Kosher Meals on Wheels, food vouchers
All funds are paid to the service providers - no funds are given directly to survivors.
Eligibilty requirements:
To qualify for financial assistance, the gross annual income must be below $23, 483 for an individual, and $31,487 for a couple. Assets should not exceed $23,000 for a single person, and $34,500 for a couple.
Please note: a car and primary residence are excluded in the calculation of assets.
Advisory Committee
JFS Ottawa, under the direction of Iris Beer, has established an advisory committee to administer survivor's claims.
