Seniors Support

Jewish Family Services offers two distinct Seniors Support Programs: The Thelma Steinman Senior Support Services, and the Diverse Seniors Support Services. These programs work to support seniors, decrease social isolation and increase quality of life.

THELMA STEINMAN JEWISH SENIORS support SERVICES

Thelma Steinman Seniors Support Services at Jewish Family Services of Ottawa assists Jewish seniors and their families in accessing the resources and services needed to maximize independent living and enhance quality of life. This is a fee for service program, based on a sliding scale.

Programs

The Monday Program is for Jewish seniors with mild cognitive impairment. The program is designed to enhance well-being by delivering social, physical, and mental stimulation in a supportive Jewish environment.

The program provides an enjoyable day of activities designed to maintain independence, provide cognitive stimulation, and enhance participants’ well-being. This program has the added benefit of caregiver relief by being able to provide a day of respite.

The Wednesday program is for Jewish seniors with moderate cognitive impairment. The program provides a one on one opportunity for participants with staff that are trained to work with the Fit Minds InterAct Caregiver’s kit. Staff take an individualized approach and focus on the strength of the participants by drawing on their needs, interests, and experiences. The InterAct program is more than just a memory program. IT Is filled with activities, exercises, and games organized around five areas of cognition:

  • Language and Music
  • Visual/Spacial Orientation
  • Memory
  • Critical Thinking
  • Computation

A comprehensive service available to Jewish Seniors and their families.  These services include:

  • Professional Social Workers and Counsellors
  • Short Term Counselling
  • Coordination of Appropriate Services such as Home Care
  • Navigation of Community Services
  • Assistance with Application Process and Transition to Retirement Homes and Long Term Care Facilities

Friends are important to maintain health. Jewish Family Services can help arrange for a volunteer to visit you on a regular or occasional basis. Friendly visitors are volunteers who are matched one on one with seniors living within the Jewish Community.

This program gives Jewish seniors the opportunity to stay connected and feel safe by having a volunteer call each weekday, at prearranged time.

The Thelma Steinman Seniors Support Services provides several options for Kosher Food security. Kosher Meals on Wheels offers nutritious kosher meals that can accommodate most seniors and convalescents’ special dietary needs such as no-salt added, and diabetic friendly. Prices are reasonable, include delivery, and are billed monthly to a credit card. Frozen & fresh meals are available. Fresh meals are prepared under OVH supervision.

We offer transportation to medical appointments and social programming to JFS clients. Pre-booking is recommended. Our friendly drivers ensure that you reach your destination safely and in a timely manner. The drivers offer assistance when needed. The cost per trip is $12.

JFS Ottawa assists Jewish victims of Nazi Germany via funds provided by The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany

The Case Management and Home Care Service Fund provides home care services, such as personal support workers, housekeepers, and nurses to enhance quality of life and enable survivors to remain in their own homes safely.

The Assistance Fund is used to help eligible survivors with:

  • Dental assistance: Cleaning and scaling, crowns, dentures etc.
  • Medical assistance: Hearing aids, eye glasses, orthopedic shoes, etc.
  • Medical Equipment: Walkers, safety equipment for the home, etc
  • Food Assistance: Kosher Meals on Wheels or gift cards to Loblaws
  • Transportation
  • Case Management

Jewish Family Services offers a wide variety of programs for Russian Speaking seniors. Programs include: English as a second language classes, dance classes, guest presenters and performers, holiday parties, Warm Home Parties, and an assortment of outings.

DIVERSE SENIORS SUPPORT SERVICES

This service ensures that diverse seniors receive help with daily living, offers opportunities for socialization and recreation, and provides culturally and linguistically appropriate health information and support to seniors and caregivers.

The goal is to allow seniors from diverse populations to live in their communities with dignity, respect and independence for as long as they are able. Improving cultural competency of health services is one step towards a more responsive, effective system.
