Position Summary:

Reporting to the Executive Director and Senior Management Team, The PR and Communications Specialist will lead agency communications, public relations and marketing activities from planning to evaluation, using a variety of print and digital channels. The PR and Communications specialist will work with JFS staff and, when necessary coordinate with external providers / specialists, to ensure creative and compelling communications strategies are used to raise awareness about JFS and profile the work we do, and to communicate our values and mission to various targeted audiences.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supports and coordinates the development and implementation of marketing and communications plans, demonstrating an understanding of the needs and sensitivities of varied audiences
  • Writes and implements targeted creative print and digital communication materials
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of marketing communication activities, tools, media and campaigns using appropriate criteria.
  • Works with internal and external resources to generate ideas/content in order to produce the necessary marketing and promotional campaigns
  • Provides communications advice/support to staff, supports the identification of information needs and related communications plans, messages and content to internal stakeholders
  • Monitors, evaluates and reports back on the impact and effectiveness of communications and marketing activities
  • Anticipates and builds capacity to respond to future market needs
  • Translates direction and marketing initiatives into visual communications
  • Supports the development and adherence to communications standards across platforms
  • Works in collaboration with other staff in a team approach to service delivery


  • Completion of a college diploma or university degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications or other related field
  • A minimum of two (2) years of related experience with a demonstrated track record of innovative and effective communications achievements

Knowledge and Ability Requirements

  • Knowledge of communications and public relations principles, guidelines and best practices
  • Knowledge of marketing, branding and layouts in print, digital and social media
  • Understanding of social services / not-for-profit agencies and stakeholders, as well as social justice initiatives / political contexts
  • Demonstrates an understanding of cultural/diversity influences on health, beliefs, and behaviours and possesses considerable knowledge and understanding of historical, cultural, spiritual, political and socio-economic issues that affect diverse populations
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively and productively with others within and across organizations
  • Ability to adjust one’s approach to meet the demands and needs of constantly changing conditions, situations and people and to work effectively in difficult or ambiguous situations
  • Knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, website content management systems, media and social media monitoring platforms, social media channels, and other standard software
  • Knowledge of graphic design software and Adobe Creative Suite, (Photoshop, Illustrator, In-Design and Adobe Pro) is an asset
  • Knowledge of print and production terminology and concepts
  • Understanding of accessibility issues and legislation related to communications and accessibility, privacy, electronic security and anti-spam
  • Understanding of the values, vision and mission of JFS and a commitment to support agency objectives
  • Very strong written and verbal communication skills including plain language skills and the ability to deliver targeted and compelling content to diverse audiences
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy in accomplishing tasks
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and works in a confidential manner and demonstrates tact and diplomacy when dealing with sensitive issues
  • Excellent organizational skills including the ability to balance multiple duties and tasks effectively and efficiently
  • Able to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • General project management skills with the ability to plan and deliver projects on time and in scope
  • Ability to use information technology such as mobile devices and computer systems in the performance of work
  • Demonstrated abilities in graphic design is an asset

Language and Cultural Knowledge Requirements

  • Knowledge of Jewish customs, values, and traditions is required
  • Oral fluency and reading and writing abilities in English are required
  • Oral fluency and reading and writing abilities in French is preferred
